Ikat is a resist dyeing technique – in simple words the artisan tightly wraps part of the yarn ( bundle of individual threads ) while dipping in dyeing solutions, creating magical weaves that cannot be replicated by commercial printing
Preparing the threads
The first step is to separate the threads into individual bundles. These bundles are then tied tightly at specific intervals to create a pattern. The tied threads are then dyed in the desired colour.
Dyeing the threads
The threads are then immersed in dye baths, which are made from natural dyes. The tied threads resist the dye, so the pattern remains visible after the dyeing process. The threads are then untied and dried.
Weaving the fabric
The dyed threads are then woven into fabric using a traditional loom. The weaver follows the pattern created by the tied threads, ensuring that the final fabric reflects the desired pattern.
Finishing the fabric
The final step is to finish the fabric by washing and pressing it to remove any excess dye and to give it a soft and smooth texture. The finished Ikat fabric is then ready to be used in various applications, such as clothing, home textiles, and accessories.
